A WestJet Boeing 737-6CT (C-GWJU/ WJA553) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR), was cleared for the instrument landing system (ILS) Runway 08R approach, and joined the ILS for Runway 08L. Air Traffic Control (ATC) queried the pilot, who then accepted a visual approach to Runway 08L. No operational impact.

Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)

Aviation Incident Report#14533: A WestJet Boeing 737-6CT (C-GWCQ/ WJA553) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) reported a passenger-related incident. A passenger was seen texting about dying and/or death. Flight Crew requested police to speak with the passenger about the conversation and to remove the passenger from the aircraft. Police met with the aircraft upon arrival; no charges laid at this time.

A WestJet Boeing 737 800 (WJA553) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) reported a possible bird strike on rotation while departing off Runway 17R. The Runway inspection at 0109Z found a hawk at Taxiway C3. A WestJet Boeing 737 600 (WJA105) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Abbotsford, BC (CYXX) was delayed approximately 10 minutes from departure off Runway 17R, pending inspection and removal of the remains.

A WestJet Boeing 737-8CT (C-FUMF/WJA553) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) was descending through 12000 feet and reported encountering a pocket of turbulence which caused the aircraft to bank 20 degrees. WJA553 was following a heavy British Airways Boeing 747 400 (GCIVD/BAW5VY) from Heathrow, England (EGLL) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) 11.5 NM ahead and 3600 feet below. Both aircraft were descending for CYVR. No operational impact.

A WestJet Boeing 737 700 (WJA553) from Fort McMurray (CYMM) to Calgary, AB (CYYC) on 10 mile final Runway 35R, requested Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to meet the aircraft at Gate 20 due to a sick passenger. EMS was arranged by Tower and the aircraft landed at 2310Z. No impact to operations.

A WestJet Boeing 737 700 (WJA553) from Fort McMurray, AB (CYMM) to Calgary, AB (CYYC) overshot Runway 29 due to an empty cargo container that was being blown towards the threshold of Runway 11. The container was corralled by an airport vehicle and was removed. Two departing aircraft, a Jazz aircraft (JZA8154) and a WestJet aircraft (WJA1511), were both delayed 5 minutes.

A Westjet Boeing 737-7CT (C-FWSY/ WJA553) from Fort McMurray, AB (CYMM) to Calgary, AB (CYYC) was given takeoff clearance runway 25 but had to exit the runway due to mechanical issues. Due to eroding spacing, a Jazz Aviation Bombardier CL-600-2B19 (JZA8460) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Fort McMurray, AB (CYMM) was pulled up on 2 mile final. JZA8460 conducted a VFR circuit and landed safely at 0022Z. No other impact.

A WestJet Boeing 737 (WJA553) from Fort McMurray, AB (CYMM) was overshot for runway 29 at Calgary, AB (CYYC) approximately 2 miles on final due to a Suncor Energy Inc Canadair RJ900 (JSN9276) that was taxiing to position. The tower controller gave taxi instruction to a United Airlines Inc Boeing 737-800 (UAL1274) to go to position and be ready for an immediate departure for Houston, TX (KIAH). JSN9276 read back to clearance and started to go to position.

A Westjet Boeing 737 700 (WJA1509) from San Francisco, CA (KSFO) to Calgary, AB (CYYC) was taxiing North on Charlie to hold short of Charlie 6. WJA553 was instructed by North Ground to taxi via Charlie - Kilo to the Apron; that taxi instruction was intended for WJA1509. WJA553 crossed Runway 34 at the runway 16 threshold - the cross occurred after an aircraft had departed and it was completed before the next arrival.

The WestJet Airlines Ltd. Boeing 737-700 series aircraft (operating as flight WJA553) was departing on a scheduled IFR flight from Toronto (LBPIA) (CYYZ) to Winnipeg (JARIA) (CYWG). NAV CANADA staff at Toronto Tower advised that the flight crew reported that their aircraft had struck a gull about one-third of the way down runway 05 during the departure. Greater Toronto Airports Authority (G.T.A.A.) Airport Operations Control Centre (A.O.C.C.) staff were advised. Airfield Maintenance staff responded and retrieved the remains from the runway at 2114Z. The flight crew was advised. Ops. impact -- unknown.

The Transaero Airlines Boeing 777-200 series aircraft was departing on an IFR flight from Toronto (LBPIA) (CYYZ) to Moscow (Domodedovo) International Airport, Russia (UUDD). NAV CANADA staff at Toronto Tower instructed the WestJet flight crew to conduct an overshoot for their approach to runway 23 at TSO518 was still on the runway on the take-off roll. The flight crew reported that a birdstrike occurred on departure off of runway 23 at 2054Z. BIRDMAN responded and found one (1) sparrow wing. The flight crew were advised and the runway was returned to service at 2059Z. Ops. impact -- one (1) departure was held.

Incident at vicinity of Ottawa (en-route to Vancouver)

Initial information received from T.S.B. Initial Notification [#A07O0355]: The WestJet Airlines Limited Boeing 737-76N aircraft (operating as flight number WJA553) departed on a scheduled IFR flight from Ottawa (M-CIA) (CYOW) to Vancouver International Airport (CYVR). Shortly after levelling off, the flight crew detected a burning odour similar to plastic or rubber. Further investigation revealed an abnormal grinding sound emanating from the aft lavatory. The circuit breaker for the water heater was pulled and the aft lavatory was closed for use. The aircraft continued en-route and landed in Vancouver without further incident. Maintenance staff inspected and tested the lavatory vacuum blower and water tank compressor IAW AMM 38-32-05 and 38-42-00; no faults were found and the problem could not be replicated. The aircraft was returned to service and there have been no further reported incidents.

The runway was closed for an inspection but no remains were found.

Incident at HAMILTON ON (CYHM) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown, Aerodrome - operations)

The Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700 series aircraft (C-FWSX, operating as WJA553) was departing on a scheduled IFR flight from Hamilton (John C. Munro) International Airport (CYHM) for Calgary International Airport (CYYC). The aircraft was departing from the secondary runway (runway 24 -- the active runway was runway 12) when a seagull was ingested into the number 1 engine. The take-off was aborted while a company vehicle came out to permit an inspection of the aircraft. The aircraft subsequently returned to the gate. Ops. impact -- none (as this occurred on the secondary runway rather than the primary runway).
Supplemental information from T.S.B. Initial Notification (#A04O0137): C-FWSX, a Boeing 737-7CT aircraft, operating as WestJet flight 2004, was taking off from Hamilton's runway 24 when several seagulls were ingested into the left engine (CFM56-7B22). There was a noticeable vibration and noise from the left side of the aircraft. The take-off was aborted at approximately 120 knots. The aircraft weighed approximately 134,000 lbs and the decision speed (V1) was 129 knots. The aircraft returned to the gate for inspection. Maintenance inspection revealed out of limit damage to fan blades #11 and #12; the blades were replaced along with matching blades #23 & #24; platforms between fan blades #11 & 12 and #12 & 13 were also replaced. Borescope of #1 engine revealed no damage. Ground runs completed - system checked serviceable. The aircraft was returned to service.

Munro) International Airport (CYHM) to Calgary International Airport (CYYC). WJA553 was climbing to FL230 when the flight crew reported a TCAS RA over the Waterloo VOR (YWT). An unknown VFR aircraft had been observed to have a Mode C transponder reading of 000 just prior to disappearing near the Waterloo VOR. Ops. impact -- WJA553 levelled off for a few miles before resuming the climb.

The Westjet Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft (operating as WJA553) was on an IFR flight from Halifax International Airport (CYHZ) to Ottawa (M-CIA) (CYOW). While passing by the Ottawa VOR, in descent for landing, the flight crew advised that there was a medical emergency on board and that they would like to have an ambulance available on their arrival in Ottawa. The flight crew did not declare an emergency, did not ask for priority and did not ask for ARFF to stand by. The aircraft landed without further incident at 1250Z. Ops. impact -- unknown.
Supplemental information from T.S.B. Initial Notification (#A04O0057): The Westjet Boeing 737 aircraft, registration C-GWBF, operating as flight 553, was en-route when a passenger became ill. The flight crew requested priority handling from Montreal Center and the aircraft was given clearance direct to Ottawa with immediate descent. During the descent, the aircraft's overspeed horn momentarily activated. EMS were standing by and met the aircraft at the gate.

Incident at HAMILTON ON (CYHM) (Alleged Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) infraction)

The Westjet aircraft (B732)(operating as WJA553) was an IFR flight that departed the Halifax International Airport (CYHZ) for the Hamilton Airport (CYHM). The second Westjet aircraft (B732)(operating as WJA568) was an IFR flight that departed the Thunder Bay Airport (CYQT) for CYHM. WJA553 was cleared for a visual approach for runway 30 following company traffic, WJA568. WJA553 reported the traffic in sight and agreed to follow, and read back the clearance, including the instruction to follow it. WJA553 then turned final and preceeded the company traffic on approach. WJA568 was subsequently turned to avoid WJA553 and was vectored to follow.

The American Airlines Inc aircraft (MD80) (operating as AAL490) was an IFR flight that departed the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (KDFW) for the Toronto LBPI Airport (CYYZ). AAL490, in descent to FL 250, descended at a high rate of descent through the assigned altitude of FL250 to approximately FL247. WJA553, in a climb to FL240, reported a TCAS RA through FL232 and returned to FL230.
