Separation was not assured when a WestJet Boeing 737-6CT (C-GBWS/WJA323) from Toronto/Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon, SK (CYXE) was cleared to F340 with opposite direction traffic, a China Airlines Boeing 747-409F (B18706/CAL5322) from Anchorage, AK (PANC) to New York/Kennedy, NY (KJFK) at F310. No impact to operations.

Incident at TORONTO / LESTER B. PEARSON INTL ON (CYYZ)

A Jazz de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GXJZ/JZA8655) from Toronto/Pearson International, ON (CYYZ) to London, ON (CYXU) was taxiing from CYYZ Taxiway AK to Runway 23 via A-H. A WestJet Boeing 737-7CT (C-GQWJ/WJA323) from Toronto/Pearson International, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon/John G. Diefenbaker International, SK (CYXE) called when at AJ for taxi instructions to Runway 23 and was issued a clearance to taxi from A-H. WJA323 was questioned by the ground controller if they were on the move and WJA323 answered yes. The ground controller re-issued taxi instructions to follow JZA8655 as it taxied on A-H. WJA323 immediately questioned their outbound control point, and in the ensuing conversation no readback was given on the following instruction or requested. As a result, WJA323 cut off JZA8655, who stopped short of WJA323 on Taxiway A at intersection AJ. Both flights continued without further impact (WOFI).

Incident at In the vicinity of: ABBOTSFORD BC (CYXX) (Other operational incident)

A WestJet Boeing 737-7CT (C-GWJO/ WJA323) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Victoria, BC (CYYJ) reported receiving a traffic alert and collision avoidance system (TCAS) traffic advisory (TA) on a stationary target at their altitude when passing overhead Abbotsford, BC (CYXX) descending through 12,500. The aircraft did not take any action and did not see any traffic. Further investigation found that transponder maintenance was being conducted on a C130 at CYXX and the Mode C was active up to FL300 and back down. Cascade Aerospace was contacted and instructed to cease and desist such activity. No operational impact.

WestJet (WJA323) and several other aircraft on final for Runway 27 reported concerns about lights coming from a local fair. The fair was set up directly beneath the approach path for Runway 27. The lights were coming from different amusement rides. The fair was set up for 3 days, but it seemed Saturday night was the only night that it operated after dark. Victoria Airport Authority was notified.

Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

TSB#A15C0169: A WestJet Boeing 737-700, registration C-GWSU, was operating as flight WJA323 from Toronto/LBPIA, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon/John G. Diefenbaker Intl, SK (CYXE). In the vicinity of the Sioux Narrows, ON, WJA323 encountered moderate turbulence at FL400. In order to avoid the turbulence, a clearance was requested and subsequently issued to descend to FL300. After levelling at FL300, fuel calculations indicated that alternate fuel reserves would have to be used to continue the flight to CYXE. The operational decision was made to divert to Winnipeg, MB (CYWG) for a technical fuel stop.

Follow-up information received from Enforcement: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) has reviewed this occurrence and the appropriate action has been taken.
A WestJet Boeing 737-7CT (C-GWCN/WJA323) from Toronto / Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon / John G. Diefenbaker, SK (CYXE) reported a green laser strike 13 miles final for Runway 27. The source appeared to be on the East end of the city approximately 1 mile South of the approach. CYXE tower advised local law enforcement. No impact to operations.

Aviation Incident Report#13768: WestJet Boeing 737-700 (WJA323) from Toronto, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon, SK (CYXE) experienced a passenger related incident. The flight crew reported that one of the Flight Attendant's megaphones was missing and they suspected a particular passenger had taken it. Crew requested Police meet the aircraft in CYXE to inspect the carry-on luggage of the passenger in question. Police met the flight and the megaphone was found after inspection.

Incident at VANCOUVER INTL BC (CYVR) (Other operational incident)

Two aircraft, a WestJet Boeing 737-7CT (C-FTWJ/ WJA323) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Victoria, BC (CYYJ) and a 650584 Alberta Inc. Learjet 35A (C-GLNL) from Anchorage, AK (PANC) to Victoria, BC (CYYJ) reported a bright light close to the airport while they were on short final for runway 27 at CYYJ. CYYJ Tower determined that the light was coming from a movie set approximately 1/4 mile north of the field along the east shoreline of the Saanich Peninsula. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was called and facilitated a shutdown of the lights for subsequent arrivals. There was no operational impact.

Incident at 67 W MIDLAND / HURONIA ON (CYEE)

UPDATE: FAA Daily Report: WestJet WJA323, a Boeing 737, from Toronto, ON to Saskatoon, SK, returned to Toronto and landed without incident after declaring an emergency due to a pressurization problem.
At 2315Z, while at FL400, a WestJet Boeing 737 700 (WJA323) from Toronto, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon, SK (CYXE) declared an emergency with Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Centre (ZMP) due to loss of cabin pressurization and requested return to Toronto, ON. WJA323 descended to 9000ft and advised the area control centre (ACC) airport emergency response was not required, the situation was no longer an emergency. WJA323 landed runway 23 at 2357Z. No operational impact.
UPDATE: TSB Report#A14O0125: WestJet flight WJA323, a Boeing 737-700 aircraft was cruising at FL400 when the crew received a cabin altitude warning. The cabin altitude was at 10000' and climbing at 500 feet per minute. The flight crew completed the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH) checklists, declared an emergency with ATC and initiated a descent. The oxygen masks were deployed and used by both the passengers and crew. The aircraft returned to land in Toronto LBPIA without further incident. Maintenance replaced outflow valve, #1 cabin pressure controller and #1 pack valve.

A Westjet Boeing 737 700 (WJA323) on a flight from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Victoria, BC (CYYJ) reported a bird strike on landing CYYJ runway 09. The Firehall did a runway inspection but found nothing. Evidence of bird strike was found on the nose of the B737.

A Miami Air Boeing 737 800 (BSK651) from Kangerlussuaq (BGSF) to Toronto, ON (CYYZ) advised number one departing Westjet Boeing 737 700 (WJA323) from Toronto, ON (CYYZ) to Saskatoon, SK (CYXE). BSK651 advised Tower they would go around as it looked tight. Tower advised to continue as a landing clearance was going to be issued. BSK651 announced they were going around as WJA323 was rotating and Tower was about to issue a landing clearance. Tower still issued the landing clearance however, BSK651 was observed in the overshoot.
