RRR2313, VC10, enroute from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (KFFO) to RAF Brize Norton (EGVN), advised the high level controller that his autopilot had failed and he was no longer equipped for Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) (unable to continue with ocean crossing). The flight opted to divert to Halifax (CYHZ). No emergency was declared. The aircraft began dumping fuel at 4455/5949 at 20:50Z. The fuel dump was complete at 4448/6031 at 20:57Z. The aircraft landed without incident at 21:28Z.

RRR9151, VC10, enroute from Halifax (CYHZ) to Brize Norton (EGVN), requested to divert to St. John?s due to a loss of an airframe part from one of its engines. No assistance was required. The aircraft landed at 16:02z without further incident. Nil TSB.

Incident at 61/30 62/40 63/50 63/60 (ATS operating irregularity)

RRR9123, VC10, enroute from Brize Norton (EGVN) to Winnipeg (CYWG) was routed 61/30 62/40 63/50 63/60. The aircraft routing was less than 30 nm from Reykjavik's airspace and estimate was passed to Reykjavik. Aircraft requested and received climb clearance, without coordination with Reykjavik. Nil TSB

Incident at ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

Gander ACC advised of RRR9212 VC10 tanker enroute from Lajes (LPLA) to Bangor (KBGR) inbound with the refueling nozzle hanging from the Aircraft. No assistance required. St. John?s (CYYT) AFF advised of situation and responded as per procedures. At 1654Z RRR9212 landed runway 29 with Nozzle hanging out. AFF followed the A/C down the runway. The crew of RRR9212 got out of the Aircraft and manually brought in the fuel nozzle. The field foreman checked the runway for Foreign Object Damage. RRR9212 was able to taxi clear of runway 29 at 1711Z. Nil TSB

Incident at 51N045W

RRR2227 VC10 enroute Gander (CYQX) to Brize Norton (EGVN) advised of a Technical problem (not enough oxygen onboard) at 1851Z and requested to return to Gander. No Emergency. No assistance. Aircraft issued clearance to CYQX. Dumped fuel. Landed Gander without incident at 2008Z Nil TSB

Airport Emergency and paradmedics responded to a fuel spill at pad 96/97 involving a BAe VC10 (RRR2381) military aircraft. The fuel handler also had fuel splash in his eyes.

Incident at Gander Oceanic (CYQX)

RRR9163 VC10 FL390 reported the loss of # 4 Engine and executed an Emergency Descent as per Contingency procedures to FL200. During the descent, RRR9163 conflicted with 2 other aircraft. The actual Lateral spacing between RRR9163 and CFC4027 was 35 NM. Spacing between RRR9163 and AAL121 was 20 NM where 60 NM Laterally was required. TSB case Closed TSB file # A00A0075.

Incident at Mont-Laurier

Two JAGUARs from a formation of four aircraft, plus a VC10, broke from the formation to land at Ottawa because of low fuel reserves. No emergency declared. Landing without incident at 1627Z. Deux JAGUAR d'une formation de quatre appareils, en plus d'un VC10, se sont retirés de la formation pour atterrir à Ottawa faute de réserve en carburant. Aucune urgence déclarée. Atterrissage à 1627Z sans problème.

RRR9299, A VC10 and 3 Tornadoes (TOR) departed CYWG for a formation flight to Bangor Maine. When the flight was approximately 70 NM East of CYWG, ATC was informed that one of the Tornadoes (RRR9667) had a "fuel overheat" problem and needed to return to CYWG. The formation went into a hold approximately 60 NM East of CYWG while RRR9667 and an escort returned to CYWG. Winnipeg TWR was given the emergency information (2 SOB and 5000KG's of fuel) and the CFR equipment responded. When RRR9667 had the WG Airport in sight the escort returned to the formation and the formation continued to destination. RRR9667 landed safely on RWY 18 at 22:07Z. The CFR equipment stood down at 22:25Z. One Aircraft was slightly inconvenienced when it had to be vectored for Runway 13 because RRR9667 was using RWY 18. ATC is not investigating further. RRR2557 VC10 on take off from Goose Bay enroute UK was advised by Gander ACC of a possible bird strike at departure point. Flight continued to destination. Nil TSB

RRR2041 VC10 parked on apron cancelled IFR flight plan due to engine problem. Aircraft requested Hi-power engine run for +30 minutes and requested fire guard. ERS was advised and responded. Aircraft remains in Gander Nil TSB.

Incident at 90 miles south of Yarmouth NS

RRR2275 was on a flight from Dulles to Brize Norton UK at FL290. The crew advised that they had lost their INS and Omega and requested a diversion to Halifax via radar vectors. They dumped fuel for five minutes at FL290 and finally landed safely at Halifax at 0249Z.

Incident at 100 nm East Sable Island

The flight was from Marrietta Ga. to Boscombe Downs England. He reported an air conditioner smoke problem and diverted from 100 nm east of Sable Island to Halifax. They landed at 0713Z.

Incident at Norway House, Manitoba

RRR2535, a VC10, which was enroute Edmonton Int. to Goose Bay, Labrador at FL 370 declared an emergency at 1558Z in the vicinity of Norway House. The crew advised Winnipeg ACC that they had smoke in the cockpit and requested a diversion to Winnipeg where an uneventful landing was accomplished at 1636Z. There were 107 souls on board and 45,000 lbs. of fuel.
