Incident at on approach to Toronto (LBPIA) (ATS operating irregularity)

The Canjet Airlines Limited Boeing 737-500 series aircraft (operating as CJA131) was on a scheduled IFR flight from Halifax International Airport (CYHZ) to Toronto (LBPIA) (CYYZ). CJA131 was advised that the approach was runway 06L by the East En-route Sector Controllers. On change over to the Terminal Controller, the flight crew were advised (and read back) that the approach would be runway 05. The aircraft was flown on the correct routing for runway 05 and the flight crew advised that they had the field in sight when the aircraft was about five (5) NM north-northwest of the airport. CJA131 was cleared for a visual approach to runway 05 and the flight crew read back runway 05. CJA131 was changed to Tower frequency while the aircraft was on left base (approximately seven (7) NM west of the airport). Shortly afterwards, CJA131 reported to the Tower Controller turning final on a visual approach. At that point, the aircraft was through the extended centreline for runway 05 and the flight crew were questioned as to which runway they were going for (acknowledging runway 05). The aircraft was approximately over the Britannia Beacon on the runway 06L approach when it got turned back towards runway 05. CJA131 landed on runway 05 without incident. There was no loss of separation as traffic was touching down on runway 06L and other traffic was on the base leg for the approach to runway 06L. Ops. impact -- unknown.
