UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. Maintenance tested and replaced the PSEU. AC returned to service.

Incident at 5NM W ST-JEAN QC (YJN) NDB

At 2049Z and while level at 5 000 ft, a WestJet Encore de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU/WEN3610) from Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) to Boston, MA (KBOS) reported having an issue it had to resolve before continuing its climb. At 2053Z, the aircraft requested to return to CYUL. No emergency declared. There was a system problem. WEN3610 landed on Runway 24R without incident at 2124Z. No impact on operations.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. Enroute, Elevator Feel Caution and Input/Output Processor (IOP) Fail Message received. Aircraft returned to the point of departure. Maintenance replaced IOP2 and the aircraft was released for service. Similar defects that occurred earlier that day were cleared prior to the hard fail.

Despite its clearance to descend to 6 000 ft and although it had correctly read back the instruction, a WestJet Encore de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU/WEN3432) from Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) to Quebec/Jean Lesage, QC (CYQB) descended to 5 600 ft. The air traffic controller (ATC) asked the aircraft to climb back up to 6 000 ft. No impact on operations.

Incident at ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

A WestJet Encore Ltd. de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU/WEN3428) from Halifax/Stanfield Intl, NS (CYHZ) to St. Johns Intl, NL (CYYT) arrived on Runway 16 and had a brake problem after landing. A Cougar Helicopters Inc. Sikorsky S-92A (C-GKNR/CHI31) from KTE56 to St. Johns Intl, NL (CYYT) on approach behind C-FENU for same runway had to cancel IFR and land another runway. C-FENU was able to vacate after approximately 5 minutes without assistance but did shut down after vacating active runway and was then towed to the gate.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. On landing roll, the aircraft noted that the Hydraulic Isolation caution light was illuminated. After landing, noted dripping hydraulic fluid. Maintenance replaced the #1 hydraulic balance relief valve and the aircraft was returned to service.
Update TSB report #A18A0097: C-FENU, a Bombardier DHC-8-402 aircraft operated by WestJet Encore, was conducting flight WEN3428 from Halifax/Stanfield Intl (CYHZ), NS to St. John’s Intl (CYYT), NL. During cruise flight, the flight crew noted the loss of fluid quantity on the number 1 hydraulic system. During the approach, the flaps operated normally, however during the landing roll on Runway 16 at CYYT, the flight crew received a number 1 ISO VALVE indication. Additionally, anti-skid braking was not available. The flight crew declared a PAN PAN as a precaution, and the aircraft stopped without further incident on the runway. After approximately 5 minutes, the aircraft taxied clear of the runway, and was towed to the gate.

A Jazz Boeing 737-8 (C-FRAX/JZA995) from St. John's Int'l, NL (CYYT) to Halifax/Stanfield Int'l, NS (CYHZ) was a negative ELT at 1840Z. They was bearing 064 from YHZ at 53NM, 17000 feet. Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax (JRCC) advised.

At 0054Z a United Parcel Service Co Boeing 757-24APF (N408UP/ UPS489) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Seattle/Boeing Field, WA (KBFI) was instructed to, and read back, to hold short N7. At 0055Z, UPS489 was advised to cross the hold short line. A WestJet Encore Ltd de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU/ WEN3235) from Kelowna, BC (CYLW) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) was instructed to fly the published missed approach as UPS489 was inside the runway protected area. UPS489 was given clearance to continue taxiing for Runway 26L. WEN3235 was vectored for a 2nd approach and landed on Runway 26L without further incident at 0107Z.

Incident at VANCOUVER INTL BC (CYVR)

UPDATE: TSB#A16P0008: The Westjet Encore DHC-8-400, C-FENU, was operating as flight WEN3107 from Vancouver Intl, BC (CYVR) to Terrace, BC (CYXT). The aircraft returned to Vancouver due to the rudder trim switches not automatically returning to neutral during the en route phase of the flight. The flight crew manually switched the rudder trim switches to neutral. The aircraft landed on Runway 08L without further incident. ATC initiated ARFF who was standing by. Subsequent maintenance actions resulted in the replacement of the rudder trim control panel and the aircraft was returned to service.
WestJet Encore Ltd de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU/WEN3107) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Terrace, BC (CYXT) departed Runway 08R at 0343Z for CYXT. Aircraft ended up returning due to a minor mechanical issue enroute. Landed on Runway 08L safely at 0505Z. Air traffic control (ATC) initiated precautionary standby. No operational impact.

UPDATE: TSB Report#A15C0023: C-FENU (a Dash 8-400) was operating as Encore Flight WEN3262 from Regina to Winnipeg. Shortly after departing the gate in Regina, the crew noted a Flap power caution light . QRH items were carried out and the Flap power caution light went out as per direction of the QRH. In cruise the Flap power caution light came back on. The crew initiated the QRH items once more with the exception of resetting the circuit breaker. Company maintenance suggested one more reset of the breaker, however the flap power light remained illuminated. The crew then requested to hold south of field while they initiated the QRH items for a flapless landing. As a precaution they requested that ARFF stand by for their arrival. They landed without incident and taxied to the gate. The Flap control unit was replaced during a subsequent inspection in accordance with AMM 27-51-00. The aircraft was returned to service.
A WestJet Encore de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-FENU / WEN3262) from Regina, SK (CYQR) to Winnipeg, MB (CYWG) reported a flap problem at 1410Z and held south of CYWG for approximately 15 minutes prior to proceeding inbound. The aircraft landed without incident at 1429Z. No impact to operations.

The Captain reported a laser strike on the climb out of CYVR where the Captain looked directly at the laser. The flight landed safely on the ground in CYXS. Crew reported the laser strike to air traffic control (ATC) and will be contacting the Standards Pilot.

UPDATE: TSB Report#A14P0182: The Westjet Encore DH8 400 C-FENU was operating as flight 3201 from Fort Saint John BC (CYXJ) to Vancouver International Airport (CYVR). Following gear retraction after take-off from Fort Saint John, the nose gear door caution light illuminiated. The flight crew actioned the checklist and continued to Vancouver. On approach the landing gear alternate deployment procedure was completed and the aircraft landed safely with aircraft rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) on standby.

A Westjet Encore de Havilland DHC 8-402 (C-FENU/ WEN3253) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Edmonton, AB (CYEG) was on 8 mile final with a US Airways Airbus A319 (AWE619) from Edmonton, AB (CYEG) to Phoenix, AZ (KPHX) lining up for runway 02 departure. AWE619 then lost communication with Tower. WEN3253 was pulled up for left circuit runway 02 under Tower control. AWE619 restored its communication with the Tower and departed runway 02. WEN3253 landed runway 02.
