at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)
UPDATE TSB: A08A0037: The Canadair CRJ aircraft, operating as Air Canada Jazz (JZA) 8802, was on a flight from Moncton to Halifax. The ATR 42 aircraft, operating as Air Saint-Pierre (SPM) 1221, was on a flight from Saint Pierre and Miquelon to Halifax. JZA 8802 was on right downwind for a visual approach to runway 32, descending to 3000 feet. SPM 1221 was inbound from the east for a straight in visual approach to runway 32, descending to 2000 feet. When SPM1221 was 12 miles east of the airport, the controller instructed SPM 1221 to turn left 10 degrees to ensure spacing. The aircraft correctly read back the instruction, and then turned right 10 degrees. The controller recognized that the aircraft had turned the wrong way, and issued a second left turn to a heading of 250 degrees. JZA8802 passed behind SPM1221 with 2.5 miles lateral and 800 feet vertical spacing, were 3 miles or 1000 feet was required.
JZA8802, RJ 100, enroute from Moncton (CYQM) to Halifax (CYHZ), was on right downwind for a visual approach to Runway 32, descending to 3,000 feet. When SPM1221, AT42-300, enroute from St. Pierre (LFVP) to Halifax, was 12 miles east of the airport, the controller instructed SPM1221 to turn left 10 degrees to ensure spacing. The aircraft correctly read back the instruction, and then turned right 10 degrees. The controller recognized the pilot error, and issued a second left turn to a heading of 250 degrees. JZA8802 passed behind SPM1221 with 2.5 miles lateral and 800 feet vertical spacing. TSB Case Closed.
