Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ) (Conflict - loss of separation, Communication error)

Approximately 15 minutes after departure, ARN8885 BAE 146 was switched to next controllers frequency . He took the frequency change as apparently so did another company aircraft just barely off Halifax airport (ARN 8855)DHC8A. ARN8855 later conflicted with a VFR C172 (CGDLV) approximately 20 west of Halifax . TSB Case Closed .
ANS and Airspace Update: Nav Canada will reaffirm procedures for similar call sign communications.
TSB Update August 7, 2001. A01A0091: APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES AFTER DEPARTURE ARN8885, A BAE-146 EN ROUTE FROM HALIFAX TO OTTAWA WAS SWITCHED TO THE NEXT CONTROLLER'S FREQUENCY. ARN8885 CHANGED FREQUENCY, AS DID ANOTHER COMPANY AIRCRAFT WITH A SIMILAR CALL-SIGN, (ARN8855) - A DASH-8, WHICH HAD JUST DEPARTED HALIFAX FOR BOSTON. ARN8855 LATER CONFLICTED WITH A VFR C172 (CGLDV) APPROXIMATELY 20 WEST OF HALIFAX. THE AIRCRAFT CAME WITHIN ONE MILE HORIZONTALLY AND 500 FEET VERTICALLY.
