at 30NM SEPT-ILES QC VOR/DME (YZV)

A United Airlines Boeing 777-200 (UAL56) from Paris, France (LFPG) to Newark, NJ (KEWR) and an Air Canada Boeing 787-9 (ACA879) from Zurich, Switzerland (LSZH) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) had less than required separation after air traffic control (ATC) issued a climb clearance to UAL56.
TSB #A19Q0054: N788UA, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200, was on instrument flight rules (IFR) flight UAL56 from Paris/Charles de Gaulle, France (LFPG) to Newark/Liberty Intl, NJ (KEWR). C-FRTU, an Air Canada Boeing 787-9, was on instrument flight rules (IFR) flight ACA879 from Zürich-Kloten, Switzerland (LSZH) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson Intl, ON (CYYZ). UAL56 was level at FL360, while ACA879 was also level at FL380. The two aircraft followed headings that were similar, but divergent. Approximately 30 NM southwest of Sept-Îles, QC (CYZV), UAL56 was cleared to climb to FL380. There was a loss of separation when UAL56 established itself at FL380 and the horizontal distance between the 2 aircraft was reduced to 8.8 NM. The required separation was 10 NM horizontally, or 1 000 ft vertically.
