AAL98, a Boeing 777-200 operated by American Airlines, was conducting an instrument flight rules (IFR) flight from Chicago (KORD) to London Heathrow (EGLL). At 0400Z, the crew reported having an engine anti-icing problem, preventing it from crossing the ocean, and requested a diversion to New York/JFK (KJFK).

Incident at approximately 45NM south of Ottawa

The American Airlines, Inc. Boeing 777-200 series aircraft (operating as AAL98) was on a scheduled IFR flight from Chicago (O'Hare) International Airport, IL (U.S.A.) (KORD) to London (Heathrow) International Airport, England (U.K.) (EGLL). When the aircraft was about 45 NM south of Ottawa, the flight crew requested an immediate diversion direct to New York (JFK) International Airport, NY (U.S.A.) (KJFK) due to an electrical problem. An emergency was not declared and the aircraft left Canadian air space at 0615Z. Ops. impact -- none.

At approximately 0600z AAL98, B-777, enroute Chicago to London, declared a medical emergency (69yr old female pax with heart problems) and requested to divert to Gander and have ambulance meet the flight. Aircraft cleared as requested. AAL98 landed Gander safely at 0622Z Nil TSB

Incident at 4933N 4029W

A Boeing 777 AAL98 en route from Chicago to Heathrow at position 4933N 4029W declared an emergency due to an electrical problem. The Crew carried out contingency plans for a turn back and then requested and was cleared direct to Gander. The aircraft requested fire-fighting equipment on arrival. The Aircraft landed in Gander 0941Z.
Update Gander Airport - 2003-06-17 - A preliminary check of the aircraft lead on-site aircraft maintenance crew to suspect that the smell of smoke was from an overheated coffee pot.
