An Air China Boeing 787-9 (B1368/CCA879) from Beijing, China (ZBAA) to Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) was slow in leaving the runway and an Air Canada Boeing 787-9 (C-FGEO/ACA011) from Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) to Shanghai Pudong, China (ZSPD) was in position for takeoff. TSC107 landed on Runway 24L at 1729Z.

A United Airlines Boeing 787-8 (N28912/UAL807) from Washington Dulles International, VA (KIAD) to Beijing Capital International, China (ZBAA) reported not having enough fuel to reach the planned destination of ZBAA and subsequently requested a reroute to San Francisco International, CA (KSFO). No impact on operations.
Update TSB Report # A18Q0191: N28912, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft operated by United Airlines, was conducting flight UAL807, from Washington Dulles Intl airport (KIAD) to Beijing Capital Intl Airport (ZBAA). After departure, the aircraft lost the L1 variable frequency starter/generator (VFSG). The applicable procedure for the VFSG failure requires the continuous use of the auxiliary power unit (APU) for the remainder of the flight. It was determined that the continuous use of the APU for the 12 remaining hours combined with the normal fuel burn of both engines would require more fuel to reach their destination than there was on board. The decision was made to divert to San Francisco Intl airport (KSFO) to refuel and change crew. The aircraft subsequently departed KFSO for ZBAA with the L1 VFSG deactivated as per the aircraft minimum equipment list (MEL).

Incident at 19NM NNW Los Angeles

TSB Update #A18F0286: C-GARG, an Airbus 319-100 aircraft operated by Air Canada, was conducting flight ACA553 fromLos Angeles Intl (KLAX), CA to Calgary Intl (CYYC), AB with 5 crew members and 110 passengers on board. Shortly after the departure from KLAX at approximately 9700 feet ASL, the flight encountered severe wake turbulence from N834AA, a preceding Boeing 787 aircraft operated by American Airlines, conducting flight AAL181 from KLAX to Beijing/Capital (ZBAA), China. ACA553 experienced an uncommanded roll of 37° when the turbulence was encountered, as the lateral separation between the 2 aircraft was 1 minute and 44 seconds, or approximately 10 nm apart. The aircraft was at 9700 feet at that point, while AAL181 had passed through this area at approximately 10 100 feet. The seatbelt sign was on at the time, and there were no reported injuries. Forecast winds for the area were less than 10 knots, from the southwest.

Incident at 5326N / 11326W (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

An American Airlines, Inc. Boeing 787-8 (AAL263) from Dallas/Fort Worth, TX (KDFW) to Edmonton, AB (CYEG) reported a flap issue on the arrival for Runway 20, declared an emergency and diverted to Calgary, AB (CYYC). Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (AARF) was requested. At 2128Z, AAL263 reported a nose gear steering issue. The aircraft landed on Runway 17L at 2257Z and was subsequently towed off the runway. Multiple aircrafts were delayed while the runway was unavailable.
Update TSB Report #A18W0157: The American Airlines Boeing 787-800, N814AA, was operating as flight AAL263 operating from Dallas-Fort Worth Intl, TX (KDFW) to Beijing / Capital, China (ZBAA). During cruise flight, approximately 200 nm East of Fond-du-Lac, SK., the flight crew declared a passenger medical emergency and that AAL263 was diverting to Edmonton Intl, AB (CYEG). On approach to CYEG, AAL263 experienced flap and slat issues and the flight crew declared an emergency. As the aircraft was above the maximum landing weight, the flight crew entered a hold to burn fuel. While assessing the technical issue, the flight crew elected to divert to Calgary Intl, AB (CYYC) due to the availability of a longer runway. Upon landing, the flight crew reported nose landing gear steering issues. AAL263 stopped on the runway and was met by ARFF. The aircraft was towed from the runway.

An automatic report indicating the flight was flying Mach .85 was received, and verbally the pilot indicated M.84. The clearance to maintain Mach .83 or less was reissued. No operational impact as spacing had not been reduced below the minimum.

When questioned, CCA879 thought the authorization was intended for them. No operational impact.

Incident at RESUM (Communication navigation surveillance/air traffic system)

The Edmonton Area Control Centre (ACC) had received an estimate from Anchorage ACC sector 64 on a United Airlines Inc. Boeing 777 200 (UAL88) from Beijing Capital Int'l Airport (ZBAA) to Newark International Airport (KEWR) approaching RESUM, at 1431Z, FL350, as per normal procedures. At 1424Z, the Anchorage sector 64 controller called to advise that the flight was not incoming and that the flight information should be removed. At 1445Z, another call from Anchorage sector 64 stated that the flight was in fact approaching, with an estimated time of presence of 1430Z/FL350 at RESUM (which was 15 minutes in the past at that point). At 1451Z, a position report for 1430Z was received a position report by RESUM which confirmed the flight was in the Edmonton ACC airspace. The flight was in this airspace for 15 minutes without the Edmonton ACC's knowledge. No traffic issues occurred and there was no impact to operations.
