A United States Air Force Boeing CC-177 Globemaster III (THUG11) from PAED to KWRI was a flight of two C17's that entered Edmonton Airspace at F350 without prior verbal coordination by Anchorage ACC as dictated by inter-unit procedures. A China Airlines Boeing 747 400 (CAL5321) from KJFK to PANC was transiting Edmonton airspace on an IFR flight at F360. Flight plan information sent by Anchorage indicated a single flight so RVSM separation was being provided. When THUG11 reported in via radio as a "flight" and it was ascertained that there were 2 aircraft the Edmonton controller immediately instructed THUG11 to descend to F330. Separation between THUG11 and CAL5321 was reduced to 1000' and 8 minutes where 10 minutes is the standard. No other impact to operations.

CAL 5321 was level at FL360 when THUG11 checked in with Edmonton ACC as a formation of two aircraft. The controller immediately cleared THUG11 to descend to FL330 as formation flights do not meet RVSM separation requirements. Separation eroded to 1000' and 8 minutes when 10 minutes is required.
