Incident at TORONTO / LESTER B. PEARSON INTL ON (CYYZ) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

After landing, a British Airways Airbus A350-900 (BAW9L) from London/Heathrow, United Kingdom (EGLL) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) stated that they had a hydraulic loss indication on landing Runway 23. BAW9L held on H at 15R pending an inspection vehicle. At 2027Z, BAW9L indicated that they had lost nose wheel steering and would require a tow to the gate. At 2039Z, the hydraulic leak was confirmed and BAW9L requested fire trucks due to the leak coupled with hot brakes. The aircraft was towed and escorted to the gate without further incident. Runway 23 operations were suspended pending an inspection.

The aircraft descended to FL373 and then started climbing back to its cleared altitude. The pilot advised air traffic control (ATC) that the aircraft was unable to level off at FL380 due to mountain wave activity. No impact to operations.

The flight was recleared to FL340. BAW293 reported the situation good at FL340 and PAN PAN cancelled at 2215Z. While in cruising flight, the crew declared an emergency due to a problem with the airspeed indicator. At 2006Z, the crew declared that the situation on board had been resolved and that they were cancelling the emergency. The aircraft continued its flight without incident.

An Air Canada Boeing 787-9 (C-FKSV/ACA875) from Frankfurt, Germany (EDDF) to Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) reported having an issue with their hydraulic system on the right side. They requested emergency vehicles at CYUL airport upon arrival. Runway 24R was closed by NOTAM, therefore it was re-opened temporarily by the Aéroports de Montréal (ADM). ACA875 landed safely at 1508Z.

Update TSB #A19F0146: C-FKSV, a Boeing 787-9 aircraft operated by Air Canada, was conducting flight ACA875 from Frankfurt/Rhein-Main (EDDF), Germany to Montreal/Pierre Elliot Trudeau Intl (CYUL), QC with 10 crew members and 243 passengers on board. During cruise flight at FL380 in the vicinity of N57/W025, the aircraft experienced a lost of the right hydraulic system pressure. The flight crew initially declared a PAN PAN as they were preparing to divert to London/Heathrow (EGLL), UK. However, it was subsequently determined that the issue was not affecting the safety of the flight or the ETOPS operation, as the system pressure and quantity was operating normally with the Electric Driven Pump on. The PAN PAN was cancelled, and the flight continued to CYUL without further incident. The operators maintenance found that the Engine Driven Pump (EDP) was leaking, and proceeded to replace it.

At 0615Z, the crew of an Air Canada Airbus A321-211 (ACA128) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) reported to air traffic control (ATC) that they had earlier observed sparks at the nose gear and along the belly of a British Airways Airbus A380-800 (BAW8C) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to London/Heathrow, United Kingdom (EGLL) when BAW8C was departing from Runway 08R at 0442Z. The report was passed to BAW8C through the Edmonton (EG) Area Control Centre (ACC). A runway inspection discovered a metal piece that was photographed and forwarded to British Airways.

A British Airways Airbus A380-800 (GXLEH/BAW8C) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to London/Heathrow, United Kingdom (EGLL) was departing Runway 08R. At the same time, two vehicles (Tractor 152+1) were instructed to proceed via Taxiway H and Taxiway D, and hold short of Runway 08R. The airport surface detection equipment (ASDE) tape was reviewed and showed that 1 vehicle had correctly turned left into the grass but the other vehicle continued on the taxiway and crossed the hold line while BAW8C was departing.

Incident at VANCOUVER INTL BC (CYVR) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

The pilot of a British Airways Boeing 747 400 from Heathrow Airport, UK (EGLL) to Vancouver Intl, BC (CYVR) reported a bird strike just prior to landing Runway 08L. Upon inspection, there was nothing found on the runway. Runway 08L was re-opened at 0326Z. No operational impact.

Incident at BOBSU intersection

An Air Canada Boeing 787-9 (C-FVLU/ACA858) on a flight from Toronto/Lester B. Pearson Intl, ON (CYYZ) to London/Heathrow Intl, UK (EGLL) was cleared to FL370 and was observed descending from FL350 to FL340 and speed decreasing by 80 knots. ACA858 re-initiated a climb to FL370. No impact to operations.
