UPDATE from the operator: Correction to the narrative: Aviation Starlink officials confirmed that it was not a laser strike. While approaching Runway 06R at Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL), the beacon at the top of Place Ville Marie was steady and not rotating. Therefore, the beacon light was in the pilots line of sight for a part of the approach.

An Air Canada Boeing 787-8 (C-GHPX/ACA128) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson (CYYZ) reported a cracked windscreen during its initial check-in at FL310, 20NM northwest of Princeton, and returned to CYVR. No further operational impact.
UPDATE: TSB Report #A21P0020: C-GHPX, an Air Canada Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating as flight ACA128, was conducting a flight from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ), with 10 crew members and 104 passengers onboard. During the initial climb, at approximately 7NM northwest of Princeton, BC (CYDC), the right hand windscreen cracked and triggered a message for the windshield heating system on the Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System (EICAS). The flight crew completed the emergency checklist, diverted back to CYVR, and declared a "PAN PAN". The aircraft landed without incident and no emergency vehicles were required. There were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft. Maintenance replaced the right hand windscreen and, as a precaution, replaced the window heat controller.

In the handover from the Cleveland Air Route Traffic Control Centre (ZOB), an American, corporately registered Raytheon Hawker 900XP (N900XG) from Las Vegas, NV (KLAS) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) experienced a pressurization problem. An emergency was declared with ZOB and a rapid descent was initiated. N900XG was given priority handling and stated that it did not require any emergency equipment on standby at CYYZ. The flight landed uneventfully at 0110Z. No operational impact.

Incident at ERBUS intersection

Filed on the AVSEP6 departure, a Korean Airlines Boeing 747-800 (KAL284) from Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Anchorage, AK (PANC) began a left turn through 2700 feet. The standard instrument departure (SID) requires a right turn to 340 degrees through 2100 feet. With no conflicting traffic, the controller cleared KAL284 direct AVSEP since it was already in the turn. The controller then cleared KAL284 to climb and maintain FL230, which was read back. A moment later, KAL284 called to confirm that it had been cleared to FL340, and KAL284 was again instructed to maintain FL230. No operational impact.

The National Operations Directive (NOD) 2021-025 and Operational Directive YYZ-OD-2021-263 expressly forbids aircraft using D6 for takeoff, as it is an oblique angled taxiway. The tower instructed the aircraft to backtrack to the threshold, in full view of the threshold, and subsequently cleared it for takeoff.

Incident at OTTAWA / MACDONALD-CARTIER INTL ON (CYOW)

A loud and clear emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal was heard by a WestJet Encore Ltd. de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GWEU/WEN3543) from Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) at FL240. Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) Trenton notified. The source of the signal was a Government of Canada, Department of Transport Beech C90A (C-FGXJ/TGO988). No impact to operations.
