A Cougar Helicopters Inc. Sikorsky S-92A (C-GKNR/CHI51) from St. Johns, NL (CYYT) to St. Johns, NL (CYYT) at 1320Z declared an emergency with a "PAN PAN" due to failure of anti-icing for engine number 1 and requested to return to CYYT. The flight was outside controlled airspace and was provided a clearance when in controlled airspace as requested. No assistance was required and pilot was returning as a precautionary measure. Prior to entering controlled airspace, the flight descended to remain clear of cloud and icing conditions. The flight cancelled its IFR clearance and returned to CYYT VFR. The fight landed at 1427Z. No impact to operations.

Ground controller advised the operator that they did not have permission into the taxiway. The operator asked for permission to proceed to the Combined Services Building (CSB) via Golf and Hotel. A Jazz Bombardier CL-600-2D24 (C-GJZS/JZA8014) from Montreal/Trudeau, QC (CYUL) to St. Johns, NL (CYYT), on the CYYT Instrument Landing System (ILS) Runway 11 approach, contacted the tower on final to indicate that the approach was not active. The tower advised the aircraft that the approach was still active for Runway 29 and switched the aircraft back to Gander Centre. The aircraft was vectored for another approach and landed safely on Runway 11. No impact on operations.

A moose was reported behind the St. Johns, NL (CYYT) tower with a WestJet Encore Ltd. de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GDEN/WEN3422) from Halifax/Stanfield, NS (CYHZ) to St. Johns, NL (CYYT) inbound for Runway 34. Wildlife advised. Moose observed passing behind de-ice facility, across the Central De-ice Facility (CDF), and continuing towards Runway 34 with traffic approximately 3 miles final. Tower advised inbound traffic of moose and initiated a pull up and go around. Aircraft executed a wide left-hand VFR circuit while wildlife officer handled the moose situation. With the moose remains 30 feet off the runway, traffic landed safely and ground crew removed carcass from field.

At 1414Z, a Government Of Canada, Department Of National Defence Lockheed C-130 (Hercules) (C2001) from St. Johns, NL (CYYT) to St. Johns, NL (CYYT) reported being unable to change frequencies with the Gander (YQX) Area Control Centre (ACC). The aircraft declared an emergency. Clearances relayed through ACC. The aircraft landed safely at 1419Z and terminated emergency. No impact to operations.

Wildlife patrol was already out on the field and checked the area with minimal delay to departure, about one minute.

A tractor involved in snow clearing became stuck on the threshold of Runway 29 with a Jazz de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GGAH/JZA8990) on a flight from Halifax/Stanfield Intl, NS (CYHZ) to St. Johns Intl, NL (CYYT) on approach. Runway 29 was active and the only available runway, as 16/34 was closed for maintenance and 02/20 was closed for snow. The vehicle was pulled out sooner than they had expected, but not before the inbound aircraft had been extended roughly 10 miles. There was only one impacted aircraft, which was delayed 4-5 minutes.

A Provincial Airlines de Havilland DHC-8-314 (C-GYCV/PVL411) on a flight from Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) to St. Johns Intl, NL (CYYT) at about 15NM final Runway 16 declared an emergency through Gander (YQX) Area Control Centre (ACC) due to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft landed at 1854Z without incident, taxied in and cancelled emergency.
UPDATE TSB Report #A20A0002: C-GYCV, a De Havilland DHC8-300 aircraft operated by PAL Airlines, was conducting flight PVL411 from Deer Lake (CYDF) , NL to St. John’s Intl. (CYYT), NL. When the aircraft was approximately 15NM final from RWY 16 the crew contacted Gander Area Control Center and declared an emergency due to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft landed uneventfully with airport rescue and firefighting standing by. Company maintenance determined that a flared fitting on the number one (#1) hydraulic system manifold had cracked which depleted the fluid level below the quantity required for the system to work. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service. The company has submitted a Service Difficulty Report to Transport Canada.
