Incident at GOOSE BAY NL (CYYR)

The Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) tower advised the London Flight Information Centre (FIC) that an Air Borealis de Havilland DHC-6-300 (C-GNFZ/LBR940) from Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) to Goose Bay, NL (CYYR), on a VFR flight plan, was returning to CYYR IFR. London FIC closed the VFR flight plan at that time. Approximately two hours later, Goose Bay tower passed a VFR arrival on another aircraft from the same company, an Air Borealis de Havilland DHC-6-300 (LBR942) from Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) to Goose Bay, NL (CYYR). London FIC questioned the flight number as there was not an active flight plan for the arriving flight number. It was determined that the arriving VFR flight at that time was intended to be under the same flight number as the previous IFR arrival. In either instance, whether a new flight number or not, the arriving aircraft did not have VFR alerting as intended. Operational impact: unknown.

Upon investigation, the London FIC determined that there was a proposed flight plan for the aircraft later in the day, however, there was not an active flight plan on file. Further investigation with airline dispatch revealed that the flight left early and the London FIC was not advised. The flight did not have alerting with the London FIC. The proposed flight plan was cancelled. Operational impact unknown.

On final approach at 0745Z, the Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) tower advised the Gander (YQX) Low Level Domestic (LLD) controller that a United States Air Force Air Mobility Command Lockheed C-130 (RCH175) from Scott Air Force Base, IL (KBLV) to Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) had a gear malfunction. The aircraft returned to CYQX frequency and entered a holding pattern at 0750Z. At 0855Z, the aircraft declared an emergency. At 0905Z, the crew advised that the gear was down, and they were working to stabilize the cargo and secure the gear. The aircraft requested an approach clearance at 0935Z. The aircraft landed at 0942Z. The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit responded and Runway 08/26 was closed, as the aircraft was shut down on the runway. Runway 15/33 was not affected.

A Provincial Airlines (PVL8321) Beech 1900D from Sept-Îles, QC (CYZV) to La Romaine, QC (CTT5) had to stay clear of B to give way to vehicles.
