Incident at DEER LAKE NL (CYDF) (Aerodrome - other, Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

At Deer Lake, NL (CYDF), a vehicle stalled while exiting the runway, causing an incoming Chrono Jet Inc. Boeing 737-247 (C-FBIM/MBK795) from Halifax/Stanfield, NS (CYHZ) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) to be put in a holding pattern while the vehicle was towed clear of runway, ultimately causing the arriving aircraft to be delayed.

When the aircraft was south of the field, the pilot advised joining the downwind landing for Runway 25 due to a rough engine. The aircraft landed without incident with no impact to operations.

Pearson, ON (CYYZ) was pushing back into the taxi lane on the terminal ramp. PVL927 instead taxied F, Runway 02, Runway 34, G, H.

Incident at 15NM NNW ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

A Provincial Airlines de Havilland DHC-8-314 (C-GYCV/PVL411) on a flight from Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) to St. Johns Intl, NL (CYYT) at about 15NM final Runway 16 declared an emergency through Gander (YQX) Area Control Centre (ACC) due to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft landed at 1854Z without incident, taxied in and cancelled emergency.
UPDATE TSB Report #A20A0002: C-GYCV, a De Havilland DHC8-300 aircraft operated by PAL Airlines, was conducting flight PVL411 from Deer Lake (CYDF) , NL to St. John’s Intl. (CYYT), NL. When the aircraft was approximately 15NM final from RWY 16 the crew contacted Gander Area Control Center and declared an emergency due to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft landed uneventfully with airport rescue and firefighting standing by. Company maintenance determined that a flared fitting on the number one (#1) hydraulic system manifold had cracked which depleted the fluid level below the quantity required for the system to work. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service. The company has submitted a Service Difficulty Report to Transport Canada.

After it had been changed over and correctly read back the frequency change to go onto 135.02, a privately registered Cirrus SR22T from Trois-Rivières, QC (CYRQ) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) lost communication with air traffic services (ATS). North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) was notified. Communications were reestablished in the eastern sector at 4740N07016W around 1625Z. No impact on operations.

Pearson Intl, ON (CYYZ) was instructed to overshoot Runway 23 because the full length of 33R had not been inspected. WJA523 landed at 1937Z. No operational impact.

Company representative (rep) then called the flight service station (FSS) to report that the helicopter had "put down" due to a minor malfunction, but all was "OK" and the aircraft would call inbound when once again airborne. Helicopter landed at CYDF at 2042Z without incident.

A Provincial Airlines de Havilland DHC-8-102 (C-FDND/PVL415) on a flight from Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) had been given the advisory and was 2 minutes from landing Runway 25 when a Gander Flight College student pilot flying a Cessna 152 (C-GZSV) on a flight from Gander Intl, NL (CYQX) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) made their initial call inside the zone on a tight left base. Traffic was passed and PVL415 requested the students pilots intentions. C-GZSV replied with its position. The flight service station (FSS) then asked if C-GZSV was able to conduct right hand turns for spacing with PVL415. The student pilot confirmed they would make a right hand turn for spacing. PVL415 landed and then 1 minute later, C-GZSV did a touch and go.

Incursion was corrected immediately, which allowed the aircraft to land safely. No impact to operations.

The gear of a Boyd & Bungay Construction Ltd. Just Aircraft Escapade (Ultralight) (C-ILFK) from Springdale, NL (CCD2) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) failed on the aircrafts arrival on Runway 25, causing a crash and a runway excursion.
Update TSB Report #A19A0074: C-ILFK, a privately operated Just Aircraft Escapade advanced ultra-light aircraft, was conducting a flight from Springdale Airport (CCD2), NL to Deer Lake Regional Airport (CYDF), NL. After landing, while taxiing and clearing the runway, a wind gust caused the aircraft to depart the runway edge. The propeller and nose gear incurred minor damage. The pilot exited the aircraft with no injuries. The runway was shut down while ARFF responded.

A WestJet Boeing 737-8CT (C-GYSD/WJA518) from Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) reported a possible bird strike on arrival. Airport maintenance staff advised and completed runway inspection. Intact remains of one seagull were recovered.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. Aircraft records were reviewed with no reports of bird strikes made by the crew.

Incident at DEER LAKE NL (CYDF)

A Provincial Airlines de Havilland DHC-8-311 (C-GNCF/PVL928) from Goose Bay, NL (CYYR) to Deer Lake, NL (CYDF) advised the flight service station (FSS) that there was a medical emergency on board and requested an ambulance. The airport security advised and an ambulance was dispatched to the airport arriving at 1235Z. The aircraft arrived without incident at 1231Z. The shift manager was advised at 1247Z.

Maintenance was performing a field check and found a seagull approximately 25 metres off the runway edge with a mutilated wing. No reports from earlier arriving/departing aircraft of possible bird strike.

When queried, the pilot advised they were aware and were correcting back to cleared altitude. The aircraft was cleared at FL410, descended to FL405 before correcting back to FL410. No loss of separation or impact to operation.
