A MAG Canada Diamond DA 42 (C-GCSO) from Calgary/Springbank, AB (CYBW) to Dryden, ON (CYHD) reported a gear indication issue and conducted a series of low approaches in order for maintenance to check gear. On the third approach, C-GCSO declared MAYDAY, requested emergency response services (ERS) on standby and subsequently landed without further incident at 1916Z. No operational impact.
UPDATE TSB Report #A20C0033: C-GCSO, a Diamond DA42 aircraft registered to Mag Aerospace Canada Corp., was conducting a ferry flight from Springbank (CYBW), AB to Dryden (CYHD), ON. While on approach to land Runway 30 in CYHD, the pilot did not receive illumination of the three landing gear indication lights. The pilot conducted a go around to troubleshoot the issue and requested a flyby for visual inspection of the landing gear. Unable to confirm if the landing gear was down through visual inspection, the pilot conducted a manual gear extension in accordance with the QRH. Shortly after the manual gear extension, the pilot observed a momentary low fuel caution light and did not receive landing gear indication lights. The pilot conducted a second flyby for visual inspection, at which time the right ECU A fail light illuminated. The pilot selected ECU B, declared a MAYDAY, and landed immediately. Uncertain of the landing gear position and condition of the aircraft, the pilot shut down both engines on the landing roll for Runway 30, but the gear did not collapse. Emergency crews joined the pilot at the aircraft, an assessment was made, and no damage was found to the aircraft. The aircraft was towed off the runway and brought to the hangar for further assessment. The operators maintenance inspection revealed that illumination of the three landing gear indication lights was achieved when the cockpit flight instrument lighting dimming rheostat was turned up. The inspection and run-up of the right engine was also conducted with no faults found. It was proposed that the slip maneuver to check the landing gear may have caused a temporary drop in fuel pressure. The drop in fuel pressure may have caused an ECU A error and the system switched to ECU B, causing a temporary loss of power on the right engine.
UPDATE Aviation Incident Report #16588: The Dryden, ON (CYHD) airport was informed by the Sioux Lookout Flight Services of possible landing gear issues on an inbound MAG Canada Diamond DA 42 (C-GCSO). Runway was closed via verbal NOTAM at 1916Z. Aircraft had no green lights in the cockpit, conducted a visual check with company mechanics, and landed without issue. Airport Manager (APM) and emergency crews on site were on standby. Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) approved aircraft removal. Runway check was done after all crews had cleared the area, and the runway was re-opened at 1939Z.
