Incident at 225NM NE GANDER INTL NL (CYQX)

At approximately 1723Z, an Openskies Boeing 757 200 (FHAVI / BOS3) from Paris / Orly, France (LFPO) to Newark, NJ (KEWR) declared a MAYDAY, approximately 225NM NE of Gander, NL (CYQX) due to a wheel well fire indication. Flight queried the runway length at St. Anthony, NL (CYAY) before advising they were diverting to CYQX. Flight was given a left turn direct CYQX. While in contact with Low Domestic the flight advised their landing gear was down and locked. BOS3 landed without incident at 1809Z. No other traffic affected, no other impact to operations.
UPDATE: TSB#A16A0078: F-HAVI, a Boeing 757-200 aircraft operated by OpenSkies, was conducting flight BOS3 from Paris/Orly, France (LFPO) to Newark/Liberty Intl, NJ (KEWR). When in cruise flight approximately 225 nautical miles North East of Gander Intl, NL (CYQX), the crew received a WHEEL WELL FIRE EICAS indication. QRH actions were completed, a MAYDAY was declared, and coordination with ATC for a diversion to CYQX was executed. The Wheel Well Fire warning indication ceased approximately 15 minutes later and the flight landed in CYQX without further incident. ARFF personnel inspected both main landing gear areas and no evidence of heat or fire was noted. The operator?s maintenance determined that the Wheel Well Fire Warning System was faulty.
UPDATE: JRCC SARSUM Halifax Report#[H2016-00894]: (501536N 0523034W - 125NM NE Gander, NL). Gander area control centre (ACC) called to advise of an aircraft who had declared a May-day for fire in the left landing gear wheel well. R910 was tasked to standby at the squadron to await further instructions. The aircraft diverted to Gander Airport and landed without further incident.

Incident at In the vicinity of: SAINT JOHN NB (CYSJ)

An Irving Air Service Cessna 680 (C-FRKI) from Bedford, MA (KBED) to Moncton, NB (CYQM) was cleared to descend to FL290 from FL370. Shortly thereafter the controller observed on radar that the aircraft was climbing through FL373 attaining a maximum altitude of FL374. The controller queried the pilot who reported now descending to FL290. A Openskies Boeing 757 200 (BOS3) from Paris/ Orly, France (LFPO) to Newark, NJ (KEWR) was opposite direction and slightly south of C-FRKI track at FL380. At their closest proximity the aircraft were 8.8 miles apart and 1000 feet vertically separated.

An Openskies Boeing 757 200 (BOS3) from Paris/ Orly (LFPO) to Newark, NJ (KEWR) reported hearing an emergency locator transmitter (ELT). First heard 1822Z 4440/6338 FL400 Strength 5. Last heard 1836Z 4428/6411 FL400. Strength 2. Joint rescue co-ordination centre (JRCC) notified. No impact.

Incident at Près du VOR de Mont-Joli (YYY)

Continental Express Embraer 757 BTA3072 was IFR from Quebec City/Jean-Lesage (CYQB) to Newark (KEWR). In the Mont-Joli (YYY) VOR, BOS3 reported severe turbulence. No impact on ATC operations.

Toronto (CYYZ) ACC - (Times are approximate.) 1415Z - problem with AFTN link to U.S. reported - all traffic through Altlantic City, contact with Salt Lake lost - some indication that problem was in the Buffalo area. 1430 - 1445Z - ""BOS3"" hotline u/s, dial problems with multiple lines to CLE ARTCC - no ringing but voice link there if someone asked to pick-up via hotline. Problems contacting MSP ARTCC. 1500 - 1540Z - problem with CLE intermittent. 1540Z - all communications with CLE ARTCC and MSP ARTCC lost. ATC 639 line to Boston OK. Outside telephone lines in use. 1650Z - CLE ARTCC lines coming back. 1700Z - CLE back to 1430Z status - i.e ""CLE34"" hotline, ATC635 and ATC601 dial lines u/s. MSP ARTCC hotlines and dial lines, ""BOS3""hotline and AFTN link to SLC still u/s. 1715Z - report received that major line break in NY State has caused the problems. Service slowly being restored. 1745Z - status remains as at 1700Z .
