Incident at TORONTO / LESTER B. PEARSON INTL ON (CYYZ) (FOD (foreign object debris))

An Air Canada Boeing 777-333ER (C-FJZS/ACA606) from Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Halifax/Stanfield, NS (CYHZ) was cleared for take-off from Runway 06L on a visual departure behind an Air Canada Embraer ERJ 190-100 IGW (C-FMZW/ACA1037) from Toronto/Lester B. Pearson, ON (CYYZ) to Denver, CO (KDEN). ACA606 aborted its take-off roll after observing that ACA1037 had aborted takeoff further down the runway due to a bird strike. ACA606 returned to the runway for takeoff. No further delays to the operation.

UPDATE TSB Report #A20O0029: On 07 March 2020, at 0948 eastern daylight time, an Embraer 190-100 (E190) operated by Air Canada (registration C-FMZW) as flight ACA1037 was conducting a takeoff under visual departure procedures from Runway 06L. After the E190 began its takeoff roll, a Boeing 777-300 (B777), operated by Air Canada (registration C-FJZS) as flight ACA606, was instructed to position and hold onto Runway 06L. While the E190 was on the take-off roll, the Tower controller issued a takeoff clearance to the B777. Moments later, the E190 had a bird strike at approximately 135 knots. The E190 flight crew initiated a high-speed abort and made a radio call on the tower frequency that they were aborting the takeoff. As the E190 flight crew made their radio call, the B777 flight crew read back the takeoff clearance on the same frequency and commenced its takeoff roll. Shortly afterwards the B777 flight crew observed that the E190 was still on the runway and aborted the takeoff, reaching a maximum speed of about 110 knots. The B777 flight crew made a radio call on the tower frequency that they were also aborting the takeoff. Both aircraft exited the runway. The E190 returned to the terminal. The B777 waited on a taxiway for 45 minutes to allow the brakes to cool and then returned to the terminal. There were no injuries. There was no damage to either aircraft.

After it had received the instruction to fly direct AVVON, a Jazz Bombardier CL-600-2B19 (C-GNJA/JZA8548) from Ottawa/Macdonald-Cartier, ON (CYOW) to Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) was seen 20 degrees off course on a heading of 094, and it came into conflict with a Jazz Bombardier CL-600-2D24 (C-GPJZ/JZA8633) from Halifax/Stanfield, NS (CYHZ) to Ottawa/MacDonald-Cartier, ON (CYOW). The air traffic services (ATS) unit instructed two aircraft to conduct a right turn to maintain the separation, which had been reduced to 1 000 ft and 3.8 NM. No impact on operations.

Incident at ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT) (Incursion - manoeuvring area)

A moose was reported behind the St. Johns, NL (CYYT) tower with a WestJet Encore Ltd. de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GDEN/WEN3422) from Halifax/Stanfield, NS (CYHZ) to St. Johns, NL (CYYT) inbound for Runway 34. Wildlife advised. Moose observed passing behind de-ice facility, across the Central De-ice Facility (CDF), and continuing towards Runway 34 with traffic approximately 3 miles final. Tower advised inbound traffic of moose and initiated a pull up and go around. Aircraft executed a wide left-hand VFR circuit while wildlife officer handled the moose situation. With the moose remains 30 feet off the runway, traffic landed safely and ground crew removed carcass from field.
