A Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-GHXG) was in the circuit at Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) and was instructed to complete a full stop and remain on the runway. The aircraft read back "cleared to land", and then performed a touch-and-go. VFR traffic, a Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-FZHF) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) was on the approach to the opposite end. C-FZHF was instructed to make an early left crosswind turn, no loss of separation or impact on other traffic.

Marie, ON (CYAM) and a Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-GSOP) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) without communication. The other aircraft were moved and squawked 7600, then a phone call was received by the tower and the aircraft landed safely, getting landing clearance over the phone. One other aircraft in the circuit was instructed to complete a full-stop landing until communication with the other aircraft could be re-established.

Multiple users called the London Flight Information Centre (FIC) to issue their Runway Surface Condition Reports via voice, as they were unable to submit them on the NOTAM Entry System (NES) external site. Airports include, but are not limited to: Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM); Fort Albany, ON (CYFA); and Peterborough, ON (CYPQ). No emergency declared nor impact to operations.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. C-GYQT had an air turn back in Thunder Bay, ON (CYQT). The aircraft had a Captains Attitude Director Indicator (ADI) that failed. The aircraft returned to base and the Captain’s ADI was replaced and the aircraft returned to service.

Incident at 16NM N SAULT STE. MARIE

Air traffic control (ATC) observed a Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-GSOP) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) flying northwest (NW) at A026 and a privately registered, amateur-built Cyclone 185 flying southeast (SE) towards the aircraft at the same altitude. ATC advised C-GSOP of traffic ahead, but was unable to get a response from C-GSOP and the Cyclone 185 was an unidentified target on radar. At 2249Z, the Cyclone 185 descended to A024, 0.2NM away from C-GSOP on radar. Both aircraft landed safely without incident at their intended destinations. No impact to operations.
UPDATE: TSB Report #A21O0091: C-GSOP, a Zlin Z242L aircraft operated by The Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology, and an amateur-built, privately registered Cyclone 185 aircraft were conducting local flights from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM). Air traffic Control (ATC) observed C-GSOP flying NW at 2600 ft and C-GDFV flying SE towards the aircraft at the same altitude. ATC advised C-GSOP of traffic ahead, but was unable to get a response and C-GDFV was shown as an unidentified target on the radar. C-GDFV initiated a descent to 2400 ft, where both aircraft came to a 0.2 NM separation on ATC radar. Both aircraft landed without further incident. Aviation Incident Report #17398: A Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-GSOP) was travelling towards Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) practice area, "Echo Lake", when they encountered a Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology Zlin Z242L (C-FANU). Both aircraft were at 5500 feet. C-GSOP attempted several times to contact C-FANU, but they did not respond. C-GSOP descended to 5000 feet for some separation, and stated their intentions. C-FANU began a descent to 5000 feet afterward, without contacting C-GSOP. C-GSOP made a collision avoidance turn to stay clear of C-FANU. At this point, C-FANU began communicating on the Sault College Dispatch frequency and returning calls.

Incident at 9NM SAULT STE. MARIE ON (CYAM) (ATM - inaccurate aeronautical information)

At 2254Z, a Bearskin Airlines Swearingen SW4 (BLS373) from Sudbury, ON (CYSB) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) was cleared to descend to 6000ft when ready, and read back the same. At this time, the controller began to experience significant issues with their transmissions on 134.42 MHz, and had multiple flights state that they were only receiving partial transmissions. At 2257Z, the controller coordinated the departure of a Skylink Express Beech 1900C (SLQ727) on a flight from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sudbury, ON (CYSB) with the CYAM tower. The controller continued to troubleshoot the radio problem by switching jacks/headsets and checking with flights for the clarity and completeness of their transmissions. During this time, BLS373 descended below 6000ft and levelled off at 4000ft. SQL727 was in the opposite direction, also at 4000ft, but passed without conflict.

An Avcom Ltd. Cessna 310Q (C-FIML) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) declared an emergency due to a landing gear light indicating that one wheel (left main) was not down and locked. The Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit was notified and on standby at the main apron. The aircraft flew a low approach, and the tower observed the landing gear to be in the down position. The aircraft landed without incident. Emergency cancelled at 2140Z, no impact to operations.
UPDATE: TSB Report #A21O0126: C-FIML, a privately operated Cessna 310Q, departed from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) for a local flight. Upon return, the landing gear was selected to the down position and the pilot received a left main landing gear unsafe indication. The pilot declared an emergency with the CYAM tower. A low approach and fly-by past the CYAM control tower was requested and conducted, and the tower personnel confirmed that the landing gear appeared to be in the down position. The aircraft landed without incident at 2140 UTC.

Incident at 25NM NE SAULT STE. MARIE ON (CYAM)

A Sault Academy of Flight Inc. Cessna 172N (C-FLPH) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) declared an emergency approximately 25NM northeast (NE) of CYAM due to a rough running engine. The pilot broadcast "Mayday" on 121.5 MHz, initially. The airport fire unit was called and responded. The aircraft landed at CYAM at 2217Z, with no further issue. Impact to VFR traffic was minimal.
UPDATE: TSB Report #A21O0125: C-FLPH, a Cessna 172N registered to Sault Academy of Flight Inc., was conducting a training flight approximately 25NM NW of Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM). While conducting training, the aircraft’s engine began to run rough and lose power. The pilot applied full throttle, conducted some troubleshooting and the aircraft was able to start a slow climb. The pilot broadcast a mayday call on 126.70 MHz, activated an SOS function on the flight tracking device installed on the aircraft and began to look for a place to land. The engine then began to run smoother and produce more power. The pilot then elected to return directly to CYAM. A mayday call was then made to the CYAM tower. C-FLPH landed safely on Runway 22 at 2217 UTC, with the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit standing by. The operator is investigating the cause of the engine issue.

Aviation Incident Report: An Ornge Global Air Pilatus PC-12/47E (C-GRXE) from Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM) to Timmins, ON (CYTS) reported being illuminated by a green, moving laser at the 3 oclock position on the right side window. The laser strike occurred after C-GRXE crossed the 10NM initial approach fix (IAF) on area navigation (RNAV) Runway 03 approach at approximately 3500 feet above sea level (ASL). The first officer noticed a moving light off the right wing tip and as they turned toward it a green laser struck the cockpit. The approximate location was determined to be on Pine Street South (roughly in the vicinity of Sunset Boulevard). The illumination lasted less than 5 seconds, and less than one second directly in the eyes. Paramedics on board were instructed to close the window shades. Transport Canada and the CYTS Flight Service Station (FSS) notified.

TSB Report #A21O0070: A privately registered, float equipped Quad City Challenger II advanced ultralight aircraft, with only the owner/pilot on board, departed from a float plane base on the St. Marys River, 11NM East of Sault Ste. Marie, ON (CYAM), for a local flight. While in cruise flight at approximately 1200 feet above ground, the engine lost power and the pilot attempted a landing along the shoreline of Lake George. During the landing, the aircrafts floats dug in and the aircraft overturned and sank. The pilot egressed the overturned aircraft and was picked up by nearby boaters. The pilot received minor injuries.
