Pilot of a Kisik Aerial Survey Inc. Piper PA-31-350 (C-GXHK) from Vancouver/Boundary Bay, BC (CZBB) to Vancouver/Boundary Bay, BC (CZBB) advised that an aborted takeoff occurred prior to the tower opening at CZBB at 181331Z on June 18th. The takeoff was aborted to avoid contact with 2 loitering bald eagles on Runway 13. The aircraft successfully avoided colliding with the birds, and backtracked on Runway 13 to accomplish a successful takeoff on the second attempt. No injuries or damages occurred. No operational impact.

A Skylink Express Inc. Cessna 208B (C-FHGA/SLQ710) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Nanaimo, BC (CYCD) reported a bird strike upon arrival, at the threshold of Runway 34. The pilot subsequently reported there was no damage to the aircraft. A vehicle (ST22) found the remains of a small bird on the displaced threshold. No operational impact.

UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. Left engine top cowl was removed, checked for damage on engine and propeller. None found. Top engine cowl dent repaired and aircraft returned to service.

A privately registered Quad City Challenger II on a flight to Victoria, BC (CYYJ) landed on Runway 09 and was taxiing on the runway to exit at Sierra. The aircraft reported a bird on the runway at the intersection of Runway 09 and Runway 03. There were no previous aircraft that reported a bird strike. The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) was called out and cleared the bird off the runway.

The flight landed at 0143Z. Damage to the #1 engine side of plane which grounded the aircraft.

A WestJet Boeing 737-7CT (C-GWBF/WJA302) on a flight from Vancouver Intl, BC (CYVR) to Regina Intl, SK (CYQR) reported a bird strike while departing Runway 26L.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. The flight crew on WestJet flight WJA302 departing CYVR to CYQR on March 22, 2020 reported a bird strike on the Captains side, near the pitot and Angle of Attack sensor, on take-off. The defect was recorded in log book. A WestJet ACA met the aircraft in Regina and performed a bird strike inspection in accordance with Boeing Aircraft Maitenance Manual (AMM) with no damage or bird remains identified. The aircraft was returned to service and has flown 3 legs and 12 hours 46 minutes since the bird strike with no related defects.

Incident at VANCOUVER INTL BC (CYVR) (Bird presence, ATS operating irregularity)

A Compass Airlines Embraer ERJ 170-200 LR (N612CZ/CPZ5778) from Seattle-Tacoma, WA (KSEA) to Vancouver, BC (CYVR) executed a missed approach for Runway 08L due to birds in the vicinity. Pilot did not fly the published missed approach but rather continued on runway heading while a Pacific Coastal Airlines Beech 1900 (PCO551) from Vancouver, BC (CYVR) to Williams Lake, BC (CYWL) departed Runway 08R simultaneously on runway heading.
UPDATE TSB Report #A20P0034: N612CZ, a Compass Airlines E175 conducting flight CPZ5778 from Seattle-Tacoma Intl (KSEA), WA to Vancouver Intl (CYVR), BC conducted a missed approach from the ILS 08L approach in CYVR due to birds. During the missed approach, Vancouver tower ATC did not provide missed approach instructions and N612CZ flew runway heading. At the same time, C-GPCE, a Pacific Coastal Airlines Beech 1900D operating flight PCO551 from Vancouver Intl (CYVR), BC to Williams Lake (CYWL), BC departed Runway 08R and an IFR loss of separation occurred. The published missed approach for ILS 08L initially instructs aircraft to climb to 420 feet on heading 083 degrees and then to conduct the climbing left turn to 3500 feet on heading 051 degrees.

A Blue Bird Flight Academy Inc. Cessna 152 (C-GVVG) on a flight to Langley, BC (CYNJ) was cleared to land on Runway 01. Aircraft turned final for Runway 07 and descended for landing while a Heli-College Canada Training Inc. Robinson R22 Beta (C-FBXR) was doing hover-work over Runway 07. Tower intervened and directed C-GVVG to the correct runway at approximately 1NM final.

A Government Of Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pilatus PC-12 (C-GMPW) from Prince Albert (Glass Field), SK (CYPA) to Kelowna, BC (CYLW) was slowed and a Southern Interior Flight Centre Cessna 172S (C-GICG) from Kelowna, BC (CYLW) to Kelowna, BC (CYLW) was put in a hold for spacing to allow for a runway inspection. One bald eagle was found intact.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. The flight crew of WJA253 reported the bird strike on log page AK65711. Maintenance performed a bird strike inspection in accordance with (IAW) Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) 05-51-18. No faults or damage found. Aircraft returned to service on log page AK65711.
