A Pascan British Aerospace Jetstream 3212 (PSC465) from Bonaventure, QC (CYVB) to Gaspé/Michel-Pouliot, QC (CYGP) performed a go-around while on final for Runway 28 due to the presence of bustards 1NM from the threshold, at 500ft. PSC465 flew a VFR circuit and landed safely.

Wild turkeys were observed on the edge of Runway 06/24, near B6, at Montreal/Mirabel, QC (CYMX). The runway was closed while airport firefighters carried out the dispersal. The runway was closed between 2102Z and 2111Z. Impact: A Cargojet Airways Boeing 757-223 (C-GCJT/CJT1951) from Covington/Cincinnati, KY (KCVG) to Montreal/Mirabel, QC (CYMX) had its landing delayed by approximately 5 minutes, and an Académie Aéronautique Cessna 172N (C-GVKP) from Montreal/Mirabel, QC (CYMX) to Montreal/Mirabel, QC (CYMX) performed low approaches instead of touch-and-go manoeuvres.

Upon take-off, an Air Inuit de Havilland DHC-6-300 (C-GNDO/AIE685) from La Grande Rivière, QC (CYGL) to Kuujjuarapik, QC (CYGW) reported that there were partridges on the threshold of Runway 31, but departed anyways, without issue. A vehicle (SVTG4) was then sent to chase the partridges away. Around 1805Z, an Air Inuit de Havilland DHC-8-314 (C-FAID/AIE861), from La Grande Rivière, QC (CYGL) to Inukjuak, QC (CYPH) taxied for take-off from Runway 31 and was delayed by a few minutes while SVTG4 chased the partridges off. No other impact.

Shortly after takeoff, a Government of Quebec de Havilland DHC-8-315 (C-GURM/QUE40+) from Quebec/Jean Lesage, QC (CYQB) to Chibougamau/Chapais, QC (CYMT) advised that it was returning to land at CYQB due to an bird strike. A runway inspection was conducted, no birds were found. No emergency declared or assistance requested. The aircraft landed safely at 1423Z. No impact on operations.

A vehicle (TK4) warned of the presence of white partridges near the threshold of Runway 31 while an Air Inuit de Havilland DHC-8-314 (C-GIAB/AIE851) from La Grande Rivière, QC (CYGL) to Montreal/Pierre Elliott Trudeau, QC (CYUL) began to taxi from the ramp to take position on Runway 13, followed by a Hydro-Québec de Havilland DHC-8-402 (C-GHQL/HYD101) from La Grande Rivière, QC (CYGL) to Rouyn-Noranda, QC (CYUY). A vehicle (SVTG4) was notified and the partridges were chased off. Impact: delays of about 05 minutes occurred for both departures. AIE851 departed at 1910Z and HYD101 departed at 1913Z.

A North Cariboo Flying Service Ltd. Beech 200 (NCB580) on a MEDEVAC flight from Prince George, BC (CYXS) to Smithers, BC (CYYD) was delayed on departure from Runway 15 due to birds in the vicinity of the runway. A maintenance vehicle was called out twice to scare the birds away. The aircraft ended up departing from Runway 24 and incurred a delay of approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

A privately registered Piper PA-28-151 from Pitt Meadows, BC (CYPK) to Pitt Meadows, BC (CYPK) called the CYPK tower while over Port Moody, BC, to report a bird strike through the windshield and possible propeller damage. The aircraft was cleared for a straight-in approach to Runway 08R. Emergency services were called to standby, but the aircraft landed safely before they arrived. One person was onboard; no reported injuries.

Incident at TRAIL BC (CAD4)

A Carson Air Beech B300 (C-GRXX/CRN811) from Kelowna, BC (CYLW) to Trail, BC (CAD4) reported a bird strike on approach to CAD4 and requested clearance to return to CYLW. Airport maintenance was informed and was dispatched to the field. CRN811 landed safely at 0130Z.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. While on approach to Trail, BC (CAD4), a Carson Air Beech B300 (C-GRXX) contacted a flock of geese. The crew elected to return to Kelowna, BC (CYLW) and landed safely. Maintenance inspected the aircraft and found that the aircraft had struck 2 geese; one bird had hit the left-hand (L/H) wing leading edge outboard (O/B) of the nacelle, and one had hit the L/H engine oil cooler. The oil cooler was found undamaged after the bird was removed. The wing de-ice boot had been ripped, and when it was removed for inspection of the leading edge, a large dent was found. The dent was beyond repairable limits and the aircraft remains grounded for replacement of the first 6 feet of the leading edge outboard of the nacelle.

A Pacific Coastal Airlines Limited Beech 1900D (C-FMCN/PCO1531) from Victoria, BC (CYYJ) to Kelowna, BC (CYLW) reported striking a bird upon departure from Runway 03. The Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit responded and found the remains of a seagull. PCO1531 continued to its destination, with no operational impact.
UPDATE from Airworthiness: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. The aircraft was inspected by the flight crew and maintenance department. The incident was entered in the company’s Safety Management System (SMS) reporting system.
